Warden Sherman Embree
Newsletter: District Seven Councillor: February 2011
Warden Embree would like to share coffee and tea with you on Saturday February 5 at 10AM at the Osborne (1st Ragged Island) Baptist Church Hall for an hour or two to hear your views on municipal government issues. Please join me.
You are encouraged to read about all the municipal services that are provided to the community in our municipal newsletters. These have been mailed to each of you, are available at the municipal offices and at our website www.municipalityofshelburne.ca My own district newsletters have been less frequent because of the publication of the municipal newsletters in the past year which provide you valuable municipal information.
A monetary incentive of $100.00 per kilometer is now being offered to any groups taking part in the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Litter Clean-up Program to clean litter from the ditches and roadways within the Municipality of the District of Shelburne before March 31, 2011. A minimum of 1 km must be cleaned in order to qualify for this incentive. The Municipality will provide bags, road signs and collection of waste. For more information or to register please contact Valeria Kean, Waste Diversion Co-coordinator at 875-5336 or by email at vkean@municipalityofshelburne.ca I anticipate a similar program for the rest of 2011.
Our volunteers should always be given credit for their contributions to our communities. Volunteer recognition nominations are being sought by 16 February 2011. A provincial Award ceremony will be held on April 4 and the municipal Recognition Reception on 12 April at 7PM.
We were pleased to receive 194 responses to our streetlight survey mentioned in a previous municipal newsletter. We appreciate everyone who phoned in or filled out the survey on-line. The overwhelming response is that residents feel streetlights are important and should be maintained; however, Council should consider lighting our roads through green alternatives. Council has initiated staff work to define a project to replace streetlights with more efficient cost saving technology (perhaps LED streetlights) and to define a streetlight locating policy regarding where these streetlights should be placed.
The survey being conducted now is to determine your opinions on various wind energy development questions. There is a Provincial program on community electrical Feed In Tariff (COMFIT) being developed that probably will be beneficial to our sustainable development. You can share your opinion on line at our website or by completing the previously mailed questionnaire. In addition to the public meeting held by the municipality these opinions will contribute to our wind power bylaw development and our Eastern Shelburne County Energy Strategy.
Your Council has been lobbying the provincial government vigorously regarding provincial services in the area. We have had discussions and written letters regarding renovations to the Roseway Medical Clinic to try to establish conditions that will attract more doctors and health professionals. We have written an aggressive letter seeking more attention to Shelburne County roads and highways infrastructure in the provincial 5-year highway improvement plan. We are encouraging government for timely decisions on the regulatory approval, licensing conditions and financing requested by Cooke Aquaculture as they try to develop a large processing facility in the area. We continue to focus on a sustainable economy. This includes the closure of the previous Regional Development Authority and developing new economic development mechanisms with the province (and our neighboring municipalities). We are also establishing the conditions / infrastructure that will attract business and jobs to the area. We are preparing for a bright future guided by our Integrated Community Sustainability Plan.
