Sandy Point Sewage Treatment Plant Upgrade

The Municipality of the District of Shelburne is undertaking a capital project to replace the ageing Sandy Point Sewage Treatment plant.  This project is being cost shared with the federal and provincial governments.  Significant progress has been made on this project in the past few months, including acquisition of land for the site of the new plant, purchase of construction materials and tree clearing to allow for detailed topographical surveying to be completed. Construction on this project commenced in August 2011, with Amber Contracting of Dartmouth acting as the general contractor. This project will be a primary focus over the next several months with completion of the lagoon system by October 31, 2011 and interconnection to the existing system by January 2012.

The project will not only ensure compliance with wastewater effluent standards but also increases system capacity, introduces secondary treatment to the system and eliminates the need for chlorine injection by using ultraviolet treatment as a chemical-free alternative
