Nomination: Margaret (Marg) Bower of Lower Ohio

Marg Bower has been an active volunteer in the community of Lower Ohio and its surrounding areas for many , many years. She has been involved with the Lower Ohio Recreation Association and the Lower Ohio Union Church (United Church of Canada - Shelburne Pastoral Charge) for the last 57 years. She coordinates the Hall Events Calling List monthly and participates in both Hall and Church cleaning, decorating, and fundraisers such as baking and selling 100 Chocolate Zuchinin Cakes the Rock-a-thon, the monthly Pot Luck Suppers , and more. She has been a Youth Mentor for Confirmation Classes for a number of local youth that wanted to join the United Church. She also attends Christ Church Anglican Church in Shelburne. Her culinary skills and easy way with youth are much appreciated by their outreach project for youth at "Our House" Youth Wellness Centre (Wednesday night supper meal).

When her children were growing up she was a 4-H leader with the Roseway River 4-H program and a Sunday School Teacher. In recent years she has been called upon to be a 4-H public speaking judge.

The Roseway Hospital Ladies Auxiliary also benefits from her willing hands. She served on the Executive and is a regular in the Gift Shop at Roseway Hospital and Nu-2-U in addition to participating in their other fundraisers such as the Christmas Giving Socks. Over the years the Auxiliary has supported the Roseway Hospital and Manor with much needed medical equipment, furniture for the Family Room, and much more.

She was treasurer of the N.S. Rug Hookers Fall School Committee for two years and serves the local rug hooking group in many ways.

Marg is a regular weekly friendly visitor to neighbors, friends, and relatives in both Surf Lodge and Roseway Manor. She makes daily calls to seniors who live alone in her community about 9am each morning to say hello and check in that all is well with them.

She uses her skills and knowledge from her days working as a bank teller to carry out an annual audit of the financial records of several local community groups. She has held the position of Secretary Treasurer for many organizations.

Marg will drop everything to provide assistance and support to a person or family in need.

The Community turns to Marg for her words of wisdom, leadership and knowledge of the community and the people who live in it. She is a pillar of the community.

Volunteers are indeed the “HEART” of our communities.  Each year we invite community organizations and individuals to nominate volunteers who they feel should be recognized for their efforts.  A subcommittee of the Municipal Recreation & Parks Advisory Committee chooses one from all those nominated to represent all the Volunteers in the Municipality of Shelburne.

Our Representative Volunteer attends the Volunteer Awards Ceremony and Luncheon in Halifax along with others from across the Province.

The Municipality of Shelburne joins with the Towns of Lockeport and Shelburne during Provincial Volunteer Week in April to recognize all volunteers who were nominated for recognition in their Municipal Units.

To nominate a deserving volunteer to be recognized in 2011 complete the Volunteer Nomination form and submit it to the Recreation Office.
