The Municipality of the District of Shelburne is pleased and honoured to have Roddy Conrad of Jordan Branch as their 2010 Representative Volunteer.
Roddy has been dedicated to the sport of baseball for the majority of his life, locally through to provincially.
Local Level: First as a participant but then at the age 18 he moved on to coaching starting with a pee wee team at the time called beavers level. For the past twenty-five years he has served the Shelburne & Area Minor Baseball Association in many capacities: President for thirteen years; Head coach for many teams from t-ball to the Shelburne Loyalist’s intermediate men’s. Last season he was head coach for four teams.
Most of Roddy’s summers are spent on a ballfield. Even if his teams are not playing he can be found in the canteen, lining the field, umpiring or just cheering on the other teams.
Roddy has volunteered his time and expertise for the past six years to run a week long baseball camp for kids for the Municipality of the District of Shelburne Recreation & Parks Department
County Level: For six of the past ten years he has served as President of the Shelburne County Minor Ball Association (SCMBA).
Regional & Provincial Level: For the last five years he has served on the Board of Directors of Baseball N.S. as the Director for the Southwest Region. In 2008 he was awarded “Volunteer of the Year” by Baseball Nova Scotia and was nominated by them for an ICON Award.
Over the years, Roddy has organized and hosted many Provincial Baseball Tournaments in Shelburne. When Roddy canvasses the community for donated items or is recruiting coaches, people find it hard to refuse him. It is to his credit that the number of kids registering for minor ball continues to rise and that the Shelburne minor baseball program is so successful.
During the winter months Roddy dedicates his volunteer time to Shelburne County Minor Hockey and the Shelburne County Arena Association serving on the Board of Directors He served thirteen years as a volunteer fireman with the Jordan Falls Volunteer Fire Department and in the past been a coach with the Shelburne Youth Bowling program.
Roddy believes in his community and its youth. He gives of himself time and time again. Baseball is his first passion but what it really is all about is the kids and his community. We are pleased to say thank-you Roddy for contributing to the quality of life in the Municipality of the District of Shelburne and its surrounding area.
