- Here are some helpful green cart tips:
NO PLASTICS PLEASE: We can not screen out all non-compostable plastic. So things like regular, clear plastic bags and plastic grocery bags are not permitted in the program, as they contaminate finished compost.
WRAP IT UP: You can line your green cart with newspaper, paper bags or paper towel. It helps to wrap particularly wet food scraps in newspaper. Newspaper absorbs extra moisture and helps with odours. Generally, the cost of paper bag liners are:
$3 - $3.50 for 5 large bags
$2 - $2.50 for 6 kitchen container bags
FREEZE IT: While it may not appeal to everyone, on extra hot days, you can store well-wrapped organic waste separately in the deep freeze and place the frozen organics in your green cart on collection day. This will stop smells and keep pests away.
IF YOU HAVE TO: While we prefer newspaper, paper bags or paper towel, some customers may still want to use bio-degradable plastic liners. For now, we will only accept those liners bearing the following logo, proving Biodegradable Products Institute standards:
ANY AMOUNT WILL DO: Empty the contents of your kitchen container into your green cart frequently – every two to three days, or when it is full. Make sure you place your cart at the curb each week, whether it is full or not.
A SPRINKLE A DAY KEEPS THE ODOURS AWAY: Sprinkle baking soda on your food scraps or mix with water to form a cleaning paste. Then you can scrub your empty green cart and have it smelling like new.
WATER YOUR CART: Regular rinsing of your empty kitchen container and green cart will help keep it clean and odorless.
TAKE COVER: Store the green cart in the garage or outside, preferably in a shaded area.
