Composting is quite simply, returning organic material to where it came from, the soil. Any material from a living source, either plant or animal, is called organic.

Composting takes very little effort, just a slight change in some of our daily habits.

Composting is a natural process, it just happens. All we are doing is creating an opportunity for compost to make itself.

As much as 30% of the garbage produced in your home could be composted in your backyard. By deciding to compost, you are reducing the need for landfill disposal and cutting down on garbage collection.

Curbside organic collection is a cost effective way to reduce waste while producing a high-quality compost for commercial distribution. However, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t compost in your backyard. When you compost at home you save the municipality or town money, help the environment and you help yourself. If you decide to use curbside collection, you can still compost lots of materials in your backyard while putting your meat, dairy, fat, and non-recyclable paper products and excess yard waste out for pick-up. In fact, backyard composting and curbside collection of organics go hand-in-hand. With recycling added, you are cuttting your solid waste by up to 75%!

Whether you have a backyard composter, green cone, use curbside collection or some other method of composting, you must be using a method of separation which keeps all organic materials out of the garbage, and out of landfills.
