Marine Conservation Network Plan for the Scotian Shelf-Bay of Fundy Bioregion
The purpose of the Marine Conservation Network Plan (herein “network plan”) is to provide a long-term strategy for spatial marine conservation in the Scotian Shelf-Bay of Fundy Bioregion. It is a result of the integration of technical work and partner feedback over the last decade. Input has been received from other federal and provincial government agencies, First Nations, Indigenous groups, stakeholders, and academia. The network plan reflects both existing and proposed future marine protected areas (MPAs) and other spatial conservation areas for the Government of Canada, including Fisheries & Oceans Canada (DFO), Parks Canada, and the Canadian Wildlife Service of Environment & Climate Change Canada. Once finalized, the network plan will guide the selection of future marine conservation areas in the bioregion, including any sites selected for advancement by 2030.
The current public engagement seeks to gather further feedback on this network plan, which will be considered as the final plan is being prepared for the end of 2024. Further details on the public engagement and supporting web materials are provided in the attached documents.
It is important to note that the Marine Conservation Network Plan is aligned with the Marine Spatial Plan (MSP) for the Scotian Shelf-Bay of Fundy Bioregion. MSP supports network implementation by providing updated data, enhanced governance and decision-support tools. An MSP approach is also being used to deliver the federal marine conservation mandate and through this approach, partners and stakeholders are engaged in an effort to meet conservation objectives while supporting sustainable human activities.
