Am I qualified to run for Council?
To be eligible, a candidate for council must:
- be a Canadian citizen of the full age of 18 years at the time of nomination.
- be ordinarily resident in the municipality for a period of 6 months preceding nomination day, and continue to so reside.
- obtain a certificate respecting taxes in prescribed showing that, as of nomination day, the candidate has paid in full all charges that are liens on the candidate’s property, and the taxes that are due to the municipality, and, all instalments or interim payments due as of nomination day have been paid.
- not be disqualified under the Municipal Elections Act.
What is the length of a Council term?
Councillors elected during a Municipal Election serve a 4 year term. Councillors elected during a Special Election will hold office until the next regularly scheduled Municipal Election.
Is Municipal Councillor a volunteer commitment?
Councillors elected to serve in any of the seven electoral districts are paid a stipend of approximately $21,950 annually. There is an additional stipend paid to the Deputy Warden and Warden.
How do I file nomination papers?
Nomination Papers can be submitted to the Returning Officer on Nomination Day, Tuesday, September 12, 2028, between the hours of 9AM and 5PM or by appointment only between Thursday, August 31 and Monday, September 11, 2028.
Is there a candidate deposit?
A deposit of $200 must accompany your nomination papers
