MUNICIPALITY OF SHELBURNE LAUNCHES STRATEGIC PLAN
November 24th, 2008 Press Release
The Municipality of the District of Shelburne is pleased to announce the launch of their Integrated Community Sustainability Plan (ICSP) development process.
An ICSP is a long term (20 to 50 year) plan for communities to make sure we are making the right investments today to ensure our community is healthy and sustainable economically, socially, environmentally and culturally for our children in years to come. Communities across the Province must develop an ICSP by March 2010 as a key requirement of the Federal Gas Tax Agreement and the Municipal Funding Agreement with the Nova Scotia government.
The Municipality of the District of Shelburne want to use this as an opportunity to put a long term strategic plan in place to ensure a healthy, sustainable community, and improve the quality of life of all our residents. For our communities, sustainability is about balancing the issues and our investments so we can preserve the environment and assure quality of life for future generations, while finding solutions to our current economic, social and cultural challenges.
The planning process requires a high level of community involvement. The ICSP Planner / Project Coordinator, Emily Tipton, will be conducting a series of community engagement activities over the next 12 months to ensure the ICSP reflects the values of our residents and addresses the sustainability issues they face. Emily plans to contact the community through existing community groups by offering both short information sessions and longer workshops. A community survey has also been developed, which will be mailed to a randomly selected group of residents but will also be available online and for pickup by residents from the Municipal offices at 136 Hammond Street in Shelburne from December 1.
Members of the community are encouraged to contact Emily to find out more about how to be involved in the planning process or to arrange an information session or workshop with their community group. Emily can be contacted by email at etipton@municipalityofshelburne.ca or by phone on the Sustainability Line, 875-3489. Emily is also available for public consultation sessions every Thursday between 12 and 2 pm (or by appointment) in the Council Chambers at the Municipal offices at 136 Hammond Street in Shelburne.
Updates on the ICSP process will be posted on the Municipality website (under the ICSP tab); www.municipalityofshelburne.ca.
