The Municipality extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Drew Nickerson following this tragic and heartbreaking loss. The death of a 13-year-old child has had a profound impact on our community, and our thoughts are with all those who are grieving during this extremely difficult time.
We acknowledge that this incident has raised significant concern among residents. In response, the Municipality intends to undertake a comprehensive review of its Dog Control Bylaw to ensure it aligns with current best practices and modern standards related to public safety, animal control, and enforcement. This type of review reflects the Municipality’s ongoing commitment to responsible governance and to periodically modernizing bylaws as circumstances, expectations, and regulatory frameworks evolve.
It is also important that any potential amendments be informed by a full and accurate understanding of the incident. The Municipality will await the completion and findings of the RCMP investigation before finalizing any proposed updates, so that any revised bylaw is evidence-based and appropriately structured to address similar situations, should they occur in the future.
A review of this nature requires careful consideration and will take time. We respectfully ask for the community’s patience as this process moves forward in a thorough and deliberate manner. Once a draft of a modernized Dog Control Bylaw has been prepared, it will be made available to residents for review, and opportunities will be provided for public input and feedback to Council prior to the initiation of the formal bylaw approval process.
The Municipality appreciates the cooperation, understanding, and compassion of residents as we work together through this difficult period, with the shared goal of supporting community safety while respecting due process.
