MUNICIPALITY OF SHELBURNE APPROVES 2010-2011 BUDGET
NO TAX HIKES AND MORE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT SPENDING
June 29, 2010
SHELBURNE – The Council of the Municipality of the District of Shelburne approved the 2010 – 2011 Operating and Capital Budgets at its regular June Council meeting. The budget for the Municipality is balanced with tax rates remaining the same as last fiscal year.
Administration costs for the Municipality will be decreasing in 2010-2011 and strategic investments will be made in health and economic development.
Health Care – Even though health is a provincial responsibility, the Municipality is moving to address gaps in infrastructure and physician recruitment. After working to successfully recruit two doctors to the area this past year, MDS has budgeted another $40,000 to continue recruiting rural physicians to the Shelburne area. Further, the Municipality has budgeted $200,000 to assist with the construction of a new modern medical clinic in the area. Given the Municipality’s leadership on this issue by being the first government with a committed investment it is hoped that the Province will soon come forward with a commitment on this project.
Economic Development – Council recognizes the job creation is the main priority in the coming year. MDS has allocated over $ 1 million in its budget for a series of economic development projects. This includes development at the industrial park, tourism infrastructure, trails infrastructure, and sustainable energy projects. We hope to work with the federal and provincial government on these projects.
Other notable investments:
- $75,000 for grants to community organizations
- $216,000 for street lights
- An increase to $290,000 for volunteer fire departments
- $45,000 for new fire dry hydrants
Tax rates for the Municipality will be:
- Residential - $1.30 per $100
- Commercial - $1.82 per $100
