MUNICIPALITY OF SHELBURNE PASSES THREE NEW BYLAWS AND NOMINATE VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR IN MARCH
March 29, 2010

SHELBURNE – The Municipality of the District of Shelburne passed three new bylaws at their regular Council meeting this month. The three bylaws are a Repeal Bylaw, Emergency Management Response Bylaw and the Shelburne County East RCMP Advisory Board Bylaw. Two of these bylaws illustrate the Municipality’s cooperation with other municipalities in Shelburne County.

The new repeal bylaw eliminates many outdated bylaws such as Corporation Seal Bylaw, Meetings of the Council Bylaw, Warden, Deputy Warden and Municipal Officers Bylaw, Tax Exemption bylaw, and Installment Billing Bylaw. These bylaws are no longer relevant due to new Council policies and provincial legislation.

The Shelburne County East RCMP Advisory Board Bylaw establishes a new merged RCMP advisory board for the three municipalities in eastern Shelburne County and the Emergency Management Response Bylaw provides the structure for the Municipality to function with the Town of Lockeport and the Town of Shelburne in the Shelburne

County East Emergency Measures Organization.

Other decisions by Council at the March regular meeting:

  • Council acknowledged the long term service of retiring employees Carl Smith, Dudley Stewart, and Gary Rose. Council wishes all three the very best in their retirement and thanks them for their exemplary service.
  • Council confirmed Earth Day activities, including a district litter challenge.
  • Council established a new tax exemption policy for community organizations.
  • Council endorsed the community vote in Little Harbour to continue an area rate for fire services.

It should also be noted that the Municipality of Shelburne will be nominating Mr. Roddy Conrad as the Municipality’s volunteer of the year. Mr. Conrad spends countless hours working in the community, particularly with the local minor baseball association as a coach and organizer. Mr. Conrad will be recognized in Halifax at a provincial event in the coming weeks.
